Time | The Chorus

When I wonder where the time has gone these last ten years, all I need to do is look at you.

You… the girl who came a year before I thought I needed her and proved to me that my timing was off. You… the girl who still prefers to sleep with a part of her touching someone she loves. You…the girl with the new, crowded, growing in teeth, sun streaked hair, and tiny, lanky frame. You… the girl with the memory of an elephant. You… the girl who welcomed her sister into the world without a hint of jealousy, overflowing with excitement and joy. You…the girl who goes into every situation confident, happy and willing to try her best. You… the girl whose laugh is truly infectious. You… the girl who is not always the fastest, not usually the winner, but consistently possesses kindness and sportsmanship. You… the girl that lights up my everything, her father’s everything, and her sister’s everything, every minute of every day.

When I wonder where the time has gone these last ten years, all I need to do is look at every fiber, every hair, every freckle, every beautiful, amazing cell that makes up you.

This week I was invited to be a part of Amy Grace’s moving project entitled The Chorus. Please visit the site to see all of the other talents, and how each of them interpreted “time” in their own way. You won’t be disappointed.

Delaney | Northern Virginia Senior Photographer

I met up in the fields with Delaney one thunder threatening summer afternoon. We dodged sprinkles, humidity and insects the size of my hand, but the pictures tell another story. Delaney is a cheerleader. I don’t mean a part time JV high school cheerleader (although she cheers in high school, too – she’s been a varsity cheerleader since she was a freshman). I mean a world champion cheerleader. The kind of girl who can do a back flip in your living room. The kind of girl who thinks nothing of being thrown 50 feet in the air. Don’t let her petite size fool you, she is as fierce as she is lovely. I can tell her strength and confidence are going to take her so very far.

Our August | California in Film

The highlight of our last month of freedom for the summer was our California vacation. Even though we plan to go as long as we can every year, we never have enough time to see all of our family and friends. This year we tried to keep it super simple by spending as much time as we could at our favorite Santa Barbara and Ventura beaches, visiting family in Ojai, and catching up with old friends (as well as a few new ones). I made a point of lugging my Contax 645 with me across the country (along with my digital camera) and brought four rolls of Fuji 400H and Fuji Acros 100 that I told myself I had to shoot completely before the trip was over. On some outings I left the DSLR at home and relied entirely on film. What resulted is what you see above, and I am smitten. The last photo is my chosen photo for Week 35 of You Are My Wild, as well.

I am thrilled to be a new member in a group that posts monthly “What ____ looks like”. This is what our August trip to California looked like on film. It is a circle, and I hope you will take a chance and follow it along. Stephanie Moore is up next – enjoy!

Late Summer in January

When film scans from a few straggling rolls of film left over from late summer hit your inbox in mid January (in Virginia) it is simultaneously heaven and torture. If you are like me, you are filled with longing and gratitude simultaneously…

I am already sure that I am going to be slowing things down this year. I hope to get back to more film and less taking pictures all the time. I will be living more. I will be teaching what I love to my girls… the oldest has her first Diana camera and she is ready. We will start with black and white and we will develop film in the kitchen together. I am going to think long and hard about what is important to me in my work, and what will leave me the most fulfilled, primarily as an artist. I will start a new project, I know I will, I just don’t know what yet. I have it all planned out in my head… :)

These were taken on Fuji Acros 100 in my Contax 645 just before the shutter started to die, on a very overcast day in Ventura, with two slightly uncooperative subjects. As usual.
