Sydney – Northern Virginia newborn photographer

With all of the New Years’ hullabaloo, exciting new projects, and the little rendez-vous my poor daughter is currently having with Influenza A, my images of sweet Sydney have taken a back seat. The last of my 2012 rush of newborns, Sidney was 3 weeks old when I got to meet her, bright eyed and fluffy headed, with some of the cutest new baby expressions. Taking it all in this little girl!

You may remember Jen and Shawn from their recent maternity session (and actually, I photographed them just after their wedding a few years ago – remember that?). They are currently living in a tiny townhouse filled with boxes, awaiting the close on their new home. I am so excited for their little family!

Are you having a baby this year? I would love to photograph you and your growing family. For those who would love to have both maternity and newborn photos (like Jen and Shawn) I have a great new combination package. Use the contact form above to get in touch, or feel free to email me at  kelsey@kelseygerhardphotography.com . Looking forward to meeting you!

You Are My Wild – Portraits of our Children

Anyone who has known me in any stage of my time as an artist and photographer knows that I like making work from what is around me. My environment, the people (and animals) in my life, our lifestyle, our story. With the new year, I have been seriously wanting to take on a personal project with my girls, my world… something where I photograph consistently for the year, and hopefully longer. A weekly portrait project. When chatting with my good photographer friends Meaghan and Becky about a project for the new year, this is what I persuaded them to do with me. Take one portrait of our children, however we may see them, every week.

What is even more exciting, is that we will be sharing our weekly portraits with 10 other amazing photographers (that I truly admire), on a separate blog. It is called, “You Are My Wild” and you can find it here (or click the image above). A weekly project where 14 photographers share how they see their children. Today marks the first week of our project – there will be 49 more, at least! Please take a look and follow along with us. January 10 on 10

10 photographs taken throughout one day and shared on the 10th of the month… Here we go!

veggie sausage.   beach house toys.   screen-less door.   almost empty.   santa and the mrs.   the obligatory boardwalk photograph.   run to me.   olde towne photo.   sun, wind, and grandma.   reflection.   the scary picture.   choptank.

I was so thrilled when Shannon Harrison asked me to join her 10 on 10 photography group a few months ago, with nine (yes, that makes it 10 total) other super talented ladies. 10 Photographers posting 10 (or you know … maybe 12) photographs taken throughout one day on the 10th of the month. I chose one very chilly day just before Christmas (Ok, so it was December, but ssshhhh… don’t tell) when we  shared Ocean City, MD with the California Grandma and Grandpa…

We all live in very different places and I am sure we all had very different days, so keep clicking the links to see all of the participants sharing. Next up in the circle of 10 is Gainesville, FL photographer Kristen Young and her gorgeous family!

And then there are the photos from my phone…

Perhaps this is overkill, but there was one more set of images I felt compelled to share from 2012 – the photos from my iPhone shared on Instagram. I’m not proud of it, but the camera I had most on hand this past year wasn’t my fancy dslr, or my new to me f100, but my phone. What I am proud of is the images, memories, moments and legitimate photographs that I made with it. It really goes to show you that it is absolutely NOT about the camera you have, but about the way you learn to use it. I am also so very fond of the community of friends I have found on Instagram. You know you are. Cheers to 2013! Can’t wait to share it with all of you.
