January has been a time for rest and taking things slow. A time for hikes and trips downtown to see a frozen solid Potomac. A time for snow days and half days and ice and delays. A time for exploration and learning.

All month long I shot on my Rollei… I developed film in the sink, and I taught my daughter to do the same. Her first roll of film from the Diana camera she got for Christmas held this portrait of me.

It is wonderful to rejoin my friends in our “what __ looks like” group. I use my posts to recap my family’s month, but each participant may choose what is dear to them. It is a diverse and talented group and I hope you will follow the links around to see what they have captured this month. I always put together a compilation of some of my favorite client moments from the year in late December. Getting to look back at the amount of work accomplished is immensely rewarding, but nothing compares to how lucky I feel to have ties to each of these unique and wonderful families.

New families that began as strangers and invited me into their homes (or met me in rugged outdoor places) that I now feel so bonded to, new babies welcomed, engagements shared, little sisters born, six month / one year / two year birthdays, extended families together, and families I get to meet up with every year for new adventures… All of it indescribably heart warming.

Thank you for letting me find the beauty in your family, and documenting every inch of it. My gratitude is endless. Here’s to a love and life filled 2014 for those of you in these images that I have already met, and for all of you I have yet to meet. xoxo

When I make a family book each year, I use the photos I took on my iPhone – the ones I share with the unique community of friends I have made on Instagram here. There is something about these photographs that is spontaneous and true, and they are always the ones that make us smile (or, more accurately, make my girls laugh until they fall off of the couch). 2013 meant travel, adventure, ocean, pool, garden, and getting covered in dog hair and love on a sundrenched couch.
